Gregory Seraus of Champlain Valley Union ran faster than any high school sprinter in Vermont history over the weekend when he ran 10.76 in the prelims of the VPA Division 1 Track and Field Championships, and then won the final in 10.78.

The 20-year-old record of 10.82 seconds was held by Eric Groce of Rutland.

Seraus also won the 200 meters with 22.10 seconds. And anchored the winning 4x100 relay (44.09).

St. Johnsbury's boys won the team championship with 114.5 points. Evan Thornton-Sherman broke two-time Olympian Andrew Wheating's all-time state best in the 1,500 meters by running 3:51.51 in a dominant performance. Thornton-Sherman also won the 3,000 meters in 8:36.22.

St. Johnsbury also won the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

Isaiah Brunache of Mt. Anthony Union, who equalled the state shot put record this spring, won that event and the discus.

The Essex girls, who put five sprinters in the finals of the 100 meters, used speed and depth to win the girls title with 143 points.

Freshman Sarah Hall won the 400 meters, was second in the 200, and anchored the winning 4x400 relay. Heidi Stewart and Scarlet Stimson went 1-2 in the 800 meters. Stewart was also second in the 1,500 meters.

Loghan Hughes of Bellows Free Academy swept the 1,500 (4:35.55) and 3,000 meters (10:26.62).
